Short summary

Recompiling BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent breaks Convai UI and connection in PIE until Unreal restart

What happened?

We found a reproducible issue with BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent in Unreal Editor.

Convai UI and connection work normally after opening the project. However, after editing this Blueprint, then Compile + Save, the next PIE session loses the Convai dashboard/UI and the character does not connect normally.

We first reproduced it by changing the Push To Talk Delay value. We then reproduced it again without changing the final Blueprint logic: disconnected an execution wire, compiled/saved, reconnected the exact same wire, compiled/saved again, then started PIE.

The same issue occurred: Convai UI disappeared and the character did not connect. Fully restarting Unreal Editor restores normal operation.

This appears related to recompiling/saving BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent, not the specific Blueprint change. Is this a known issue in beta.29.1, and is there a recommended fix or workflow?

What did you expect?

After editing, compiling and saving BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent, I expect Play In Editor to initialize Convai normally without requiring a full Unreal Editor restart. The Convai dashboard/UI should remain available and the character should connect normally.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a working Unreal project where Convai initializes and connects normally.
  2. Open BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent.
  3. Open the Push To Talk graph.
  4. Disconnect an existing execution wire from the True output of a Branch.
  5. Compile and Save the Blueprint.
  6. Reconnect the exact same wire to its original position.
  7. Compile and Save again.
  8. Start Play In Editor.
  9. Observe that the Convai dashboard/UI is missing and the character does not connect normally.
  10. Fully close Unreal Editor and reopen the project.
  11. Start PIE again.
  12. Observe that Convai UI and connection are restored.

Hi, Can you please share logs

Hi Anmol, I reproduced it again in a fresh editor session and attached a redacted diagnostic log excerpt.

The first PIE works normally. I then compiled/saved BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent twice while disconnecting and reconnecting the same execution wire, so the final Blueprint logic remained unchanged.

During both compiles the log reports No world was found / Could not get pointer to a GameInstance for transient BP_ConvaiPlayerComponent objects.

In the following PIE the chatbot/backend still reaches the Convai server, but the UConvaiPlayerComponent registration, connection-state-change, and audio-streaming startup messages present in the working PIE are no longer present, and the Convai UI/player behavior is broken until the Unreal Editor is restarted.

UE 5.7.4 / Convai 4.0.0-beta.29.1 / native client 0.2.14.1+eb84d82.
