Short summary

RODE AI-1 is detected by the ConvAI Unreal plugin, but when we speak into the microphone, ConvAI receives no audible voice and behaves as if there is no speech input.

What happened?

We are experiencing an audio capture issue when using a RODE AI-1 input with the ConvAI Unreal Engine plugin.

The device is detected successfully and the logs show that audio capture starts normally. However, when we speak into the microphone, ConvAI does not detect the speech and behaves as if there is no voice input.

To investigate this, we added a local recording test using the same capture flow. The recording starts successfully and a WAV file is created with the expected duration and file size. However, even though we are speaking into the microphone during the recording, the resulting WAV file contains no audible voice.

The RODE AI-1 input was also tested outside the application, where the microphone audio can be recorded and heard correctly.

For comparison, we tested the same application and recording flow with a Jabra Link 390 device. With the Jabra device, ConvAI receives the voice correctly and the recorded WAV also contains audible speech.

The attached logs include both cases for comparison: the failing RODE AI-1 test and the working Jabra Link 390 test. This shows that the same application and audio capture flow works correctly with another audio input device.

RODE AI-1:

Jabra Link 390:

We also tested different sample rate and channel configurations, but this did not resolve the issue with the RODE AI-1.

What did you expect?

We expected the RODE AI-1 input to provide microphone audio to the ConvAI capture pipeline in the same way as the working Jabra Link 390 device.

The recorded WAV should contain the user’s voice, and ConvAI should receive the microphone audio for speech recognition.
