ConvaiBaseCharacter is deprecated - Please reparent the character class to Pawn and add the BP_ConvaiChatbot Component instead

I had a working project on my desktop and I decided to zip it to my laptop due my mom’s current ill health and need someone to look after her, after reinstalling all the fixes and update for the 5.6 Convai I finally open the project and see this message.

Every single character that I’ve made and my own custom-modified fps player character are crawling with errors and the convai plugin’s files event graph shows nothing but a dev prompt with this message?

What is this and what’s going on?
Can this be fixed? Can the old version of the metahuman plugin, alongside with the bug fixes folder be made available again?
Do I have to start everyt hing from scratch? Can I no longer share my desktop project with anyone else because they won’t be able to run it since my desktop files are outdated?

Please help me make clear of the situation and let me know what I’m missing, I would really appreciate it, thank you.

Hi, first of all, I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s health situation, and I hope things get better soon.

From what you described, it sounds like you may have installed the latest V4 update from FAB, or some files may not have transferred correctly when moving the project from your desktop to your laptop. In cases like this, it’s possible for existing characters, Blueprints, and the Convai plugin Event Graphs to show errors if the project is opening with a different plugin version than the one it was originally built with.

The good news is that you most likely do not need to start from scratch.

Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Download the compatible earlier version from the releases page here:
    https://github.com/Conv-AI/Convai-UnrealEngine-SDK/releases

  2. In your project’s root folder, create a Plugins folder if you do not already have one.

  3. Copy the Convai folder from the downloaded package into that Plugins folder.

This should allow the project to run again with the V3 version that your project was likely using before.

You should also still be able to share the project with others, but the key is that they need to use the same compatible Convai plugin version as the project. So the issue is most likely not that your desktop project is “too outdated,” but rather that there is now a plugin version mismatch.

If you try the steps above and still run into problems, please share your Unreal Engine version and, if possible, a screenshot of the exact error message. That will help us guide you more precisely.

Thank you, before signing off and give the file a try. I would like to ask whether V4 improves on the use of narrative design.

Because when working with V3, the character tends to have a hard time identifying which narrative trigger is in effect.

Sincerely,

V4 doesn’t support Narrative Design yet, but there will definitely be improvements.

Understood, thank you for your reply, if there are otherwise Unreal tutorial on the use of narrative design and trigger I’d like to know about them as there is not a dedicated page for Unreal’s part but a few videos.

Sincerely,

Yes, we’ll share videos once we add narrative design to v4.
