I am thinking in using convai to manage an VR AI npc of a cat. Have anyone made anything alike? I would love to hear some cases before investing time and money onto this service.

Yes, you can definitely use Convai for that. There are examples of similar use cases, and you can also check the Made With Convai category for sample projects from the community.
Convai does not have a limitation on the visual type of the character. You can use a custom character, a cat, a cube, or even an empty object. If you want to use lip sync, your character will need to have the required blendshapes.
