Short summary

Convai 4.0.0 Beta 15 – session disconnects after several minutes of inactivity

What happened?

Hi,

I am using:

Unreal Engine 5.3.2
Convai 4.0.0 Beta 15

I have an interactive installation running on a computer in another city. The application needs to run unattended for long periods of time.

The Convai character connects correctly when the application starts, but after several minutes without any conversation, the Convai session changes to Disconnected.

I understand that Convai may automatically disconnect an idle session.

My question is:

What is the simplest and recommended way to prevent this from causing a problem in a public installation?

Is there a way to disable the idle disconnect/timeout completely?

If not, is there a simple Blueprint solution to automatically reconnect the character when the connection changes to Disconnected (for example, using Connection State and Start Session)?

I would appreciate a simple step-by-step example that is compatible with Convai 4.0.0 Beta 15 and Unreal Engine 5.3.2.

The computer running the installation is in another city, so I need the application to recover automatically without requiring someone to restart Unreal or the PC.

Thank you.

I checked the relevant documentation, resources, and similar forum posts before posting.

Reconnect

  • Reconnect – The plugin now reconnects a character by itself after a network or server drop, and a session the server closed for inactivity comes back the moment the player talks, types or presses push-to-talk again. Set Reconnect Attempts (Project Settings ▸ Plugins ▸ Convai ▸ Connection) to turn it on; it defaults to 0 (off) in this release. No new events: On Server Connection State Changed reports one Reconnecting per drop, then Connected, or one Disconnected with the reason when it gives up; the character’s own On Attendee Connection State Changed still reports the drop. A Blueprint that restarts the session from Disconnected keeps working: the restart is folded into the pending attempt instead of opening a second one. The debug overlay shows RECONNECTING n/N or DORMANT.
  • Idle Timeout Behavior – A session the server closes for inactivity used to be gone until the game restarted it. With reconnect on, Idle Timeout Behavior (Project Settings ▸ Plugins ▸ Convai ▸ Connection) decides what happens next: Reopen When Player Returns (the default) reopens it the moment the player talks, types or presses push-to-talk; Reopen Immediately reopens it straight away, once per idle close; Stay Closed keeps the old behaviour.
