Rollback to older versions

Is it possible to access older versions? While I love the Avatar Studio, the inability to import the characters directly into Unity has blown my Master’s Thesis to bits. Rolling back to an older version would help immensely. Thanks

Hello @bretthcook,

Welcome to the Convai Developer Forum!

With the 3.2.4 update, the Character Importer has been removed. You can find this change documented in the Changelogs.

Why Was Character Importer Removed?

Previously, Convai used Ready Player Me (RPM) for avatar creation. However, due to reliability issues and external factors beyond our control, we wanted to develop a more customizable and fully controlled solution that offers high-quality characters and environments without third-party limitations. This led to the creation of Avatar Studio, which provides:

  • Greater control over character customization
  • High-quality characters and immersive environments
  • Easy, experience creation in minutes
  • Public, Unlisted, or Private experience sharing
  • Cross-device accessibility (PC, Mobile, Tablet)
  • Advanced features like Vision for more immersive experiences

This is the first version of Avatar Studio, and we are actively working on improvements. Currently, Avatar Studio characters cannot be imported into game engines like Unity or Unreal.

What Changed with Ready Player Me?

Previously, you could import RPM avatars using the Character Importer. However, as per Ready Player Me’s official announcement (see here), RPM is developing a new SDK and has closed new signups.

To prevent disruptions to Convai’s functionality, and for the reasons mentioned above, we removed the Character Importer.

What Are Your Options Now?

Convai is visually independent, meaning you can use any type of avatar, whether it’s a simple cube, an empty object, a low-poly character, a highly detailed model, or your own custom creation, Convai fully supports them.

If you need LipSync functionality, make sure your avatar includes OVR, ARKit, or Reallusion Blendshapes. We are also working on improving documentation for custom character integration to make the process easier.

We understand that such changes can take some adjustment. If anything is unclear, please feel free to ask. We’re here to help!
