I have a paid indie subscription that expires 11/2025. When I try to import a Convai Character, I’m getting a “Please upgrade your plan to access core api services error” . Please advise
Hello @bretthcook,
Welcome to the Convai Developer Forum!
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue.
Please rest assured, there are no plan restrictions for importing characters, so this appears to be a bug. I’ve informed our team, and we’re working on a fix that will be included in an upcoming update. In the meantime, this issue will not prevent you from using Convai.
If you’re using a Ready Player Me character, you can design your avatar directly on their website, integrate it into your project, and simply add the ConvaiNPC component to proceed.
Thank you for your understanding, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions!
I’m using RPM is myself and need the Convai characters I created with their backstories so that won’t work. I tried importing two RPM characters and changing their character ID attribute to the Convai character ID with no luck. I’m at a standstill right now until the license error gets fixed unless there is another work around or I’m misunderstanding this workaround. Thx
Could you please show the ConvaiNPC component in your Unity Inspector? Sharing a screenshot where this component is visible will help us analyze the issue and guide you effectively.
When you try this, what kind of error are you encountering? Could you share the errors from your Console? (Don’t forget to click the Collapse button in the Console window to show all messages.)
Going to take a break for a bit and come back later today for a fresh perspective
I’m having the same problem but with the free plan: I cannot import characters anymore.
Back at it :-). I created a new project and a new scene using the Convai Template. I imported my RPM character to be used as an NPC. I added the Convai NPC script. The images are the Inspector for the Convai NPC pre-runtime, runtime, and the error log. The program runs but does not display the conversation box. I’m using the default Convai Essentials without any changes for my player
Make sure to add a Character Name and enter the Character ID.
Did with no change. Always get a not close enough message and I’ve moved around the plane to see if there is a magic spot elsewhere.
Have you added a collider to your character?
WooHoo. Works now. Your are a tremendous (and patient) troubleshooter! Looking for to the API fix on the importer.
That’s fantastic to hear! Thank you for your kind words—I’m glad I could help.
We’ll resolve the bug as soon as possible. Please note that updates may take some time for approval.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
Frustrating, but the workaround does work:
- Load the RPM character you want to work with as an NPC using the ReadyPlayerMe options under the Tools menu item
- Attach the ConvaiNPC component
- Enter the character name and ID from the Convai Dashboard
- Add a collider to the RPM character
@K3 - Does that track with what we did?
Yes, that’s correct!
