Short summary

A user has said that the dialect of the German the character speaks varies and is often not correct for Germany

User input

Hello, how are you today

What happened?

The character spoke their reply in the wrong dialect, the following is exactly what they have told me about it :

"„Every now and then, she suddenly switches her dialect and the tone of her voice. She sounds completely unfamiliar in those moments, and it feels as though she’s alternating between several different accents rather than sticking to just one. Some of them are so slurred or unclear that it’s nearly impossible to understand what she’s saying, even though you can still tell she is trying to speak German. My guess would have been a Swiss dialect, while Torhagen mentioned it sounds more like someone from the Netherlands trying to speak German. I can’t pinpoint it exactly, but it is a bit immersion-breaking because she simply isn’t the familiar Suki we know during those times. "

What did you expect?

For the character to speak with the correct dialect.

Steps to reproduce

Speak to the character in German.

I checked the relevant documentation, resources, and similar forum posts before posting.

Wasn’t this issue already resolved previously?

https://forum.convai.com/t/some-changes-to-german-language-since-a-convai-unity-sdk-v3-to-v4-update/6494/2

Hi Kaan, at that time yes they did say it was resolved, but now yesterday they have reported it to me again, in fact he mentioned it I think maybe about a week ago but mentioned it more firmly yesterday. I can’t check it myself as I don’t speak German, I said I would pass on the report to Convai.

Hi Tyke,

The reported character 2786b252-9d59-11f0-88d8-42010a7be025 is configured for en-GB, it-IT, es-ES, and ja-JP, not German. Can you please confirm?

hi @ysinha, yes you are correct, please accept my apologies, i gave the wrong character id, it is actually : 3a28ace8-bb1e-11f0-b031-42010a7be025

(i have 3 versions of this character so the character can speak many languages and i gave you the wrong version).

Thanks for clarifying. We checked both character IDs against the timeframe in your report. Our backend shows that the original character ID was actively generating voice responses on September 18. The corrected character ID’s last recorded interaction was August 17, 2026, with no voice activity during the reported period.

This suggests the deployed Unity build may still be using the original character. Could you please confirm which character ID is configured in the deployed build? We used September 18 based on your report; if the affected conversation occurred on another date, please share its approximate date so we can check that window.

I’m so sorry, I have that many characters speaking multiple languages that I became confused who was speaking what language etc, please accept my apologies again.

I have traced the full path of the versions for this character and in particular the German speaking version and I am confident the user is choosing this character ID :

2bce41a2-bd59-11f0-a98e-42010a7be025

Unfortunately I cannot pinpoint an exact Session ID for him as there are 1000s I think.

Thanks, this character ID lines up with the production activity we found.

We can see interactions for this character on September 18, and its latest observed interaction was September 21. We do not retain session recordings, so we cannot replay the exact audio.

However, we have identified a likely cause in the multilingual language-selection path. This character has Dutch as its primary language and also supports German. Some English event/text prompts on September 18 were not among the character’s configured languages, so the TTS language fell back to Dutch. If the response text was German, this could explain the incorrect German accent you heard.

If possible, could you provide an approximate time and timezone for the affected September 18 interaction? Even morning, afternoon, or evening would help us isolate it further.

Hi ysinha, I have asked the German speaker with the dialect issue what time he mainly uses my app to speak to the character and he said mostly during the evening (Germany time).

Edit : i have set German as the primary language, my app has far more German users than Dutch.
